EMV Chip Cards

Your City & County Credit Union debit card with chip technology is here! 

What is a chip card?

A chip card, or an EMV card, is a regular debit or credit card that is enabled with a microchip. The microchip holds the information that is currently in the magnetic stripe in your card. When used at a chip-enabled terminal, the microchip makes your transactions more secure as the microchip sends a one-time code to the terminal to complete the transaction. 

Where can I use my chip card?

You can use your chip card at any merchant. More and more merchants in the U.S. are adopting chip-enabled terminals. These terminals are equipped with chip card readers and magnetic stripe readers. If you are at a merchant without a chip-enabled point-of-sale terminal, you can use your magnetic stripe to complete the transaction.

Chip technology is now used throughout the world, making world travel easier and more secure.

What makes chip cards more secure?

When the chip card is inserted into a terminal, a unique code is created and transmitted to the terminal to complete the transaction. Since a new code is generated for each transaction, it makes it more difficult for fraudsters to duplicate your account information and can decrease the risk of fraud on your account.

How do I use my chip card?

If you are using your card at a chip-enabled terminal: 

     1. Insert card, chip first, facing up, into the terminal.
     2. Follow the prompts to sign, enter a PIN, confirm payment, etc.
     3. Remove your card once the purchase is complete.

Remember, your card still has a magnetic stripe on the back and can be used at a traditional terminal.
Will I still need a PIN for my chip card?
Your debit card still has a PIN associated with it since there are circumstances when you will need to know your PIN. 

2016 In Review

On April 6th, 2017 we joined together at our annual membership meeting for a recap of what 2016 looked like for City & County.
Below are highlights from the evening.

Member Savings & Earnings:

    • Members saved and average of $396 in yearly fees compared to the National Average
    • Debit Cardholders earned $82,424 in cash back bonuses
    • Platinum Rewards Credit Cardholders earned $100,797 in cash back rewards

Community Involvement:

    • 529 Students received education on budgeting and checking account basics from our staff
    • 1,440 High school students completed financial literacy curriculum sponsored by City & County
    • 213 Community members attended a financial education class hosted by City & County
